Project Summary

What the F is UX is a scripted dramedy exploring the untold stories behind the tech products we use every day through humor, conflict, and a lot of whiteboard and last-minute project chaos.

As an up-and-coming filmmaker and director in the making, I created this project as a proof of concept after earning multiple festival selections and a Silver Select award with OTOXO Productions (Barcelona, Summer 2025). I’ve since worked on two short films and a commercial, all within the span of a few months, pushing me to bring this bold, timely series to life.

Inspired by my 10+ years in UX and fed up with the company polotics, I wrote and designed a full visual pitch deck to bring the concept to life.
All characters were AI-generated to visualize casting direction, tone, and team dynamics.
This project showcases my interdisciplinary work across concept development, character writing, photography, branding, and storytelling.

The phrase "What the F is UX?" resonates with a clearly defined, highly engaged global audience, and it stands out from competing scripted content.

The series fills a major gap in representation while tapping into universal workplace experiences familiar to millions of tech professionals.

This unique positioning gives the show strong organic traction, crowdfunding potential, and appeal to festivals, networks, and streaming platforms.

Main Cast

  • Devon – Lead UX Designer (Main Character)

The term "unicorn" refers to the unrealistic expectation that one person can fix everything.

Devon is the backbone of the product experience and the soul of the show. Smart, bold, and unbothered by buzzwords, she’s been labeled a unicorn, but really, she’s just doing three jobs in one: UX research, UI design, and product strategy, because tech still thinks “design” is just making things pretty.
She started her career in a UX bootcamp and clawed her way through messy teams, clueless stakeholders, and startup chaos to become the lead designer in her company. She advocates for users as if it's a way of life, and she understands when to assert herself or step away from the whiteboard.
Tone: Witty, passionate, grounded. Imagine a blend of Issa Rae's charisma and a detailed post-Figma breakdown.

  • Sean Wallace – Junior UX Designer

He is a rising talent who has something to prove.

Sean is sharp, ambitious, and soaking in everything from Devon’s mentorship to Machu’s bug reports. He’s got outstanding instincts but is still learning how to speak up in a room full of louder voices. Caught between pixel tweaks and team politics, he’s navigating the tricky transition from junior to mid-levelhoping someone notices before his Figma files do.

Tone: Heart of the team, hungry to grow, quietly leveling up.

  • Jordan Reyes - Front-End Engineer

The logical mind. Devon’s favorite debate partner… and headache.

Jordan is the backend-dev-turned-tech-lead who builds clean code but often clashes with Devon when timelines get tight or logic wins over design. They push each other in ways that make the product better but their meetings spicy. Underneath the snark is respect.
This is the workplace frenemy vibe with emotional undercurrents: they vent to each other, challenge each other, and occasionally grab a drink to recover from product chaos.

  • Kelsey Nuyen - Business Analyst

The proactive generalist who “helps” by making chaotic wireframes in PowerPoint… but actually keeps the product alive.

Kelsey is the first to say “it’s urgent” every week. She often jumps ahead and whips up wireframes (without asking UX) to unblock others. It’s messy, it’s bold… but occasionally it’s just what was needed to get decisions moving. She works closely with Devon and the UX team, not always perfectly, but with mutual respect. She’s constantly rewriting requirements as product direction changes daily and somehow keeps the chaos contained. She brings structure, chaos, and last-minute clarity.

Tone: Energetic, type-A, unintentionally funny. Think: the co-worker you secretly admire and want to throttle at the same time.

Cast

  • Maya Patts Sr. UX Researcher

The guardian of user empathy, fighting for research budget and data validity.

The team’s voice of reason and the user's. Maya doesn’t just fight for the user, she fights for the right way to do research, even when timelines say otherwise. She's constantly asked to “just do a quick survey,” but she knows the difference between insight and assumption. Underpaid, overbooked, and armed with a spreadsheet of proof, Maya holds the company accountable to real user needs whether they want to hear it or not.
Think: Cool under pressure, the quiet MVP of every launch.

  • Riley Bloom UX Intern

The wide-eyed wonder, desperate to learn and make an impact, started with component organization.

New to the game and full of energy, Riley is a sponge for feedback and a secret Figma nerd. They’re obsessed with systems, hoping to fix what’s broken, starting with the design library no one uses correctly. Riley’s journey is about finding their voice in a loud room, learning that sometimes the most valuable skill is knowing when to speak up and when to hit “Undo.”
Think: The wide-eyed rookie who might just surprise everyone.

  • Machu Mohaned QA Specialist

As the watchdog and last line of defense, she is ready to document every bug caused by rush jobs.

The last stop before disaster, and she knows it. Machu has the patience of a saint and the sharp eye of a hawk. Her bug reports are mini novels, and she’s tired of fixing the same logic issues over and over because “we had to ship fast.” She often uncovers more than just code problems; sometimes she spots broken communication or missing flows no one else thought to test.
    Think: Underestimated genius with receipts.

  • Luis Dominguez – Tech Support Engineer

The hidden MVP of the user experience.

Luis is the one talking to users every day, but somehow, no one ever invites him to product meetings. He knows every quirk in the system and where users struggle most. His desk is where real insights live. But management keeps forgetting that.
He’s not in every episode, but when he appears, he drops truth bombs the rest of the team can’t ignore.

Cast

  • Tina M. Cruz Product Owner

Tina is responsible for balancing user needs, business demands, and sprint velocity while avoiding burnout.

‍The boss of the backlog and the meeting room.
Tina is well-versed in the product, understands the politics, and has the ability to quickly stop scope creep. She juggles business goals and stakeholder chaos while trying to keep the team from burning out or blowing up. Direct but not heartless; she pushes hard because she believes in the work and in keeping the vision alive when everyone else is tired.

Think: no-nonsense, coffee-fueled, always five steps ahead.

  • Richard "Rich" Harrison VP of Innovation

The executive dreamer who never lands.
Always on a plane, Rich returns just in time to drop a new initiative that must launch by tomorrow. Obsessed with buzzwords, "oomph," and glossy, unresearched ideas, he pitches big visions to leadership without asking the team if it’s possible. A chaos catalyst in designer sneakers.

Think: if TED Talks had deadlines.

  • Samira “Sam” Khalil – Devon’s Roommate

The sass compass and off-the-clock therapist.

Sam doesn’t work in tech and thank god. She keeps Devon grounded with late-night talks, brutal honesty, and popcorn-fueled pep talks. Sam sees through the industry BS and calls it out with no filter. She’s warm, sharp, and always ready to drop a one-liner that hits too hard.
Tone: Real talk with sister energy.

  • Bartender Jeff - TBD

I am fed up with everyone's corporate stress/drama but love the company nonetheless.
